Soapbox Summer Songwriters Workshop Wrap-up

11 Jul

2012 summer songwriters wrap-up

At the end of June, Soapbox Music partnered with Rock The Cello to host a first-ever week-long summer songwriting workshop for middle school students at the Chicago Waldorf School and Soapbox Music in Logan Square.

The workshop itself was envisioned as an experiment– an investigation into the possibilities at the intersection of teaching and creativity.     Organizers asked themselves and camp participants a series of questions:  What is a song?   What are some approaches to creating a new one?  How can this process be made collaborative?   Everyone involved had a great time and learned a lot– whether about writing songs, micing string instruments, or the logistics of summer camps and large-group CTA rides.

Swell Piece

22 Jun

Played on Oak Street Beach yesterday, the solstice, in a performance of Swell Piece by James Tenney, with Nomi Epstein and A.pe.ri.od.ic.    The idea was to space out the 16 performers, each doing their own swells, so that observers could walk between us and experience shifting perspectives and textures.  Which many did.  It was an interesting performance.   Very meditative.  I concentrated on bow contact, and looked out over Lake Michigan.  I noticed that my perception of time was affected by bow speed — a weird Einstein revelation.   Here’s a write up in the reader

One of the things I have going on is a performance in Aperiodic 3 at Elastic on Sunday evening.  Nomi Epstein is the curator of the series.  She’s very cool — a young pianist and composer here in Chicago, and I’m looking forward to playing!
